A&D SJ-5001HS calibration uses an external reference weight, but the first step should be verification rather than immediate adjustment. A scale moved between workstations can show an error because of level, vibration, debris or container contact, and recalibrating around a bad setup can make the problem worse.

Set up a stable test

Put the scale on a rigid, level surface and adjust the feet using the level indicator. Remove debris from under and around the pan, confirm batteries are healthy or use the approved adapter, and let the display stabilize. Keep fans and moving equipment from disturbing the platform during testing.

Verify zero and return to zero

With the pan empty, establish zero. Apply a known reference weight, wait for a stable indication, then remove it. The display should return consistently to zero. A persistent residual can indicate debris, mechanical contact or an unstable setup rather than a span error.

Check repeatability

Apply the same test weight several times from the same starting condition. If readings scatter by more than your acceptance limit, do not calibrate yet. Find the cause of instability first. Repeatability problems are commonly related to bench movement, pan contact, battery/power issues or a damaged scale.

Run a multi-point check

A one-point test cannot reveal load-dependent error. Check multiple known values that represent the actual working range, while staying within the 5 kg capacity. Record as-found errors before any adjustment. This makes it possible to distinguish a simple offset from a more serious linearity or mechanical problem.

Perform external calibration only when needed

If verification shows a stable systematic span error, follow A&D's external-calibration instructions for the SJ-HS series and use an appropriate calibration mass. After the procedure, repeat independent zero, repeatability and multi-point checks. The calibration is not complete until the scale has been verified after adjustment.

Troubleshooting common failures

Drifting zero: check temperature, debris, bench movement and pan contact. Unstable display: check vibration, wind, shifting loads and batteries. Consistent offset: verify the test weight, then calibrate if required.
