How to Calibrate, Verify, Clean & Maintain the A&D SJ-5000HS

A&D SJ-5000HS calibration uses an external reference, while daily reliability depends on stable installation, correct pan seating, adequate battery voltage and routine known-weight verification. Treat calibration as an adjustment procedure—not as the first response to every changing reading.

Prepare the scale

Set the scale on a rigid level surface, away from drafts and vibration. Install the clean dry pan and verify that it does not rub the housing. Let the unit and reference mass stabilize to room conditions. Confirm zero and wait for a stable indication before starting calibration or verification.

External calibration

Follow the manufacturer calibration sequence with an appropriate calibrated reference mass. Center the mass and place it gently. When the procedure completes, remove it, confirm zero and test an independent known weight. A calibration routine that finishes successfully is not proof that the scale meets every application tolerance; verification must compare actual error with the process requirement.

Verification and repeatability

Place the same known weight several times, removing it completely between readings. Results should return consistently within the tolerance established by the user’s procedure. Test a working-range value relevant to normal portions or packages. If results vary, inspect the bench, container, pan and environment before changing calibration. Product movement and warm or evaporating samples can also shift readings.

Cleaning the pan and housing

Remove and clean the SUS304 pan separately using compatible methods. Wipe the housing with a lightly damp cloth and keep liquid away from controls and the battery compartment. Dry fully and inspect the pan support for crumbs or residue. Reinstall the pan, check zero and verify a known weight before returning to production.

Battery maintenance

Use four matched D cells and replace the full set together. Observe polarity and remove batteries for extended storage. If operation becomes intermittent, compare performance on fresh batteries and the correct AC adapter. Battery problems can mimic scale faults, especially when the unit shuts down or resets under load.

Troubleshooting common problems

Unstable readings often come from vibration, airflow, temperature changes or a container touching another surface. Poor zero return can result from debris or pan binding. A repeatable error against known masses may require calibration or service. A load that exceeds 5 kg gross must be removed immediately. Pressing tare only changes the displayed reference; it does not increase load-cell capacity.

It may touch the bench or housing. What causes poor zero return? Residue, pan contact, an unstable surface or a remaining load. Should all batteries be replaced together? Yes.
