How to Calibrate, Verify & Use Large Containers on the A&D SJ-30KHS

A&D SJ-30KHS calibration uses an external reference, but the greatest practical risk on this 30 kg compact scale is often container geometry. A centered calibration cannot correct a tote or box that touches the bench, display housing or another object and diverts part of the load away from the pan.

Installation and pre-calibration checks

Use a rigid bench that will not flex under a 30 kg load. Confirm the scale is stable, the pan is correctly seated and no cable, wall or object contacts the housing. Let the unit and reference mass reach room equilibrium. Remove all loads, confirm zero and wait for stability. If the bench rocks or bows, correct the workstation before calibration.

External calibration and multi-point verification

Follow A&D’s external calibration procedure with an appropriate calibrated mass. After adjustment, verify with independent references at representative operating loads. A high-capacity scale may be used at 5 kg, 15 kg and near 30 kg; checking more than one region can reveal load-dependent error that a single calibration point does not show. Record as-found and as-left results where required.

Repeatability and load-position checks

Apply the same reference several times, removing it between readings, to test repeatability. Then place a suitable test load at representative pan positions without creating unsafe off-center loading. Large position-dependent differences may indicate leveling, pan support, damage or mechanical contact. Stop using the scale for critical work when verification is outside the organization’s tolerance.

Large-container bridging

A bin can be below 30 kg and still be unsuitable. Watch for edges resting on the bench, handles touching the display, bottoms spanning beyond the pan and flexible containers sagging onto the housing. Test with an empty container first and confirm the display responds normally when the container is gently shifted without leaving the pan. Use a larger platform when safe full support cannot be achieved.

Cleaning and battery care

Remove and clean the SUS304 pan separately. Wipe the housing and keep liquid out of the electronics and battery compartment. After drying, inspect for debris beneath the pan and verify zero. Replace four D batteries as a matched set, observe polarity and remove batteries for extended storage. Compare AC and battery operation when diagnosing intermittent power issues.

Troubleshooting

A low reading with a large bin usually suggests bridging or partial support outside the pan. Unstable readings point to vibration, a flexing bench, moving contents or contact. Poor zero return may come from residue or pan binding. A consistent error against references may require calibration or service. An overload indication requires immediate load removal; tare does not protect the load cell.

Is calibration external? Yes. Should a 30 kg scale be verified at multiple loads? It is good practice when the application spans a wide range. Why does a tote read low? It may touch another surface. Can an extension plate be improvised? Do not create an unsafe unsupported arrangement; use an appropriate platform solution. Can the scale be pressure washed? No SJ-HS washdown rating is listed.
