For help sizing a platform or vessel weighing system, call MNM Scales at (832) 290-3120 or email mnmscales@yahoo.com with the dead weight, maximum product weight, number of supports and environment.

The MNM GX-1-5K 5,000 lb shear beam can be used as the sensing element in industrial platforms and supported vessels when the structure is designed to load the cell correctly. The important engineering question is not simply “is 5,000 lb enough?” but how total dead load, live load, load distribution, impact, piping forces and safety margin are shared among all support points.

Floor and Pallet Scales

A four-corner platform is one of the most common shear-beam layouts. Each cell supports a corner through a loading foot while the fixed end bolts to the frame. The frame must be stiff enough that it does not twist excessively under an off-center pallet. After assembly or replacement, a corner test and junction-box trim are essential so the same pallet does not read differently depending on where it sits.

Hopper and Ingredient Bins

A hopper can be supported at multiple points with shear-beam assemblies when the load path is controlled. Flexible connections are often needed for inlet/outlet piping, dust boots, hoses or conduits so those attachments do not carry part of the vessel weight. A mechanically accurate load-cell system can still read incorrectly if rigid piping bypasses the sensors.

Tank and Process Vessel Weighing

Tank weighing adds thermal expansion, agitator vibration, plumbing forces and changing center of gravity to the design problem. The combined rated capacities of the cells need adequate margin above vessel tare plus maximum contents, but each support must also be protected from a disproportionate share of the load. Consider restraints for wind, seismic or horizontal forces separately from the vertical measurement path.

Capacity Planning Example

Four GX-1-5K cells provide 20,000 lb of combined nameplate sensor capacity. That does not automatically make the completed scale a 20,000 lb scale. Subtract platform or vessel dead weight, account for uneven loading and dynamic forces, and apply an engineering safety margin. The structure, feet, mounting hardware and overload stops must also be rated for the intended service.

Environmental Considerations

The GX-1-5K exact listing identifies alloy-steel construction. For washdown, corrosive chemicals or outdoor exposure, verify the sealing level and whether a stainless sensor is more suitable. Protect junction boxes and cable entries from moisture, route cables away from pinch points, and avoid pressure-washing directly into unverified seals or connectors.

Commissioning Checklist

Level the system, confirm every support carries load, check for mechanical binding, verify wiring, perform a corner/support balance test, calibrate zero and span with known load, and verify several points across the working range. Recheck after the vessel is connected to piping because installation changes can introduce force bypasses that were not present during an empty-frame test.
