10,000 lb Crane Scale Kit: S-Type vs Self-Contained | Cypress, TX

A 10,000 lb crane scale is two different products that share a capacity. One is an S-type load cell on a 20 ft cable with the readout on a wall or desk. The other is a self-contained hanging crane — display on the hook, remote in your hand. All Scales USA in Cypress sells both as MNM Scales kits. This post is a chooser, not another kit spec. S-type: cell in the line, readout on the wall

The MS70-10k-tc is a complete 10,000 lb × 2 lb S-type kit: NTEP alloy steel S-type load cell, 20 ft cable, two eye bolts, and a digital indicator with a 6-digit 1 in backlight, peak hold, RS-232, rechargeable 6 V battery, and AC supply. It ships calibrated. The live page says NTEP on that alloy steel S-type load cell. Do not print “not NTEP” on this kit. The cell is NTEP. Tension and compression both apply. The head mounts on a desk, wall, or column — not on the hook.

Use an S-type when you want the display away from the lift, a 20 ft cable run, peak hold on a fab or scrap lift, or the same cell in tension today and compression on a hopper tomorrow. Cypress yards like it because the operator is not squinting at a hook 20 feet up.

Finer 10,000 lb S-type kits exist. The live ST-10K 10,000 lb × 0.5 lb at $349 and the ST-10K 10,000 lb × 0.2 lb at $386 are process kits. Those PDPs say the assembled hanging scale is not legal for trade. We will not invent NTEP on those cartons. If you need the NTEP cell story at 10,000 lb × 2 lb, stay on MS70-10k-tc.

Self-contained: the scale is the hook

A hanging crane is one piece. You shackle it on, lift, and read the LED on the body or on the handheld remote. Two live 10,000 lb × 2 lb MNM Scales heads we verified:

Use a self-contained head when the lift is mobile, when you do not want to run a 20 ft cable, and when a rigger wants the weight at the hook. Do not invent NTEP on these hanging scales. The PDPs say process-only. If a customer is paying by that hang, you need a different conversation — NTEP cell plus place-in-service, not a remote on a process crane.

How we choose it in Cypress

Call (832) 766-5410 with the lift, not the catalog number. We ask whether the display has to live in a cab or on a column (S-type, 20 ft cable) or on the hook (self-contained). We ask whether you need peak hold for a shocky lift. We ask whether anyone is selling by that weight. We ask for the true maximum, not the number that feels safe. A 10,000 lb kit is the wrong buy if you regularly kiss 12,000 lb.

On FM 529 we will hang a known weight on the cell or walk you through eye-bolt orientation so the S-type is in the load path, not side-loaded. For a hanging head we check the shackle, the remote, and the 6 V pack. MNM Scales kits are the house kits we know best. If a cable is short, we talk length before you order a second cell.

Is the MS70-10k-tc NTEP?

The live page: NTEP alloy steel S-type load cell, 20 ft cable, 10,000 lb × 2 lb. We will not print “not NTEP” on that kit. NTEP on the cell is not automatic place-in-service for a commercial hang. Ask on the call if you are selling by weight.

Is the $789 hanging crane NTEP?

No. The live PDP says process hanging, not legal for trade. Same for PS-10000CR-L at $599.

S-type or self-contained for a scrap yard?

If the operator needs the number at a desk or a scale house, S-type. If the rigger needs the number on the hook with a remote, self-contained. Call and describe the crane.
