A&D FX-123 vs FX-120i: Same Class, Different Generation

The A&D FX-123 is the current Fortis-series milligram balance All Scales USA sells for 122 g × 0.001 g work. The A&D FX-120i is the discontinued FX-i predecessor in that same weighing class. If a 120i already sits on your bench, you are not on the wrong instrument. If you are buying a new 122 g milligram A&D from this shop today, the live buy path is the FX-123 at $675.
We are All Scales USA in Cypress, TX. Factory numbers below come from A&D’s Fortis and FX-i literature, the live FX-123 product page, and the live FX-120i product page. This is a successor comparison, not a rewrite of our older FX-123 review.
Same 122 g × 0.001 g class
A&D kept the weighing class when it moved from FX-i to Fortis. Both the FX-123 and the FX-120i are published at 122 g capacity and 0.001 g readability. Repeatability is 0.001 g. Linearity is ±0.002 g. The pan is Ø130 mm. Stabilization is about one second in FAST when the bench is decent. Both use a Compact Super Hybrid Sensor. Both are external-calibration models. Grain is a selectable unit; the factory spec remains 0.001 g.
Leftover FX-120i stock still makes sense for some benches. You are staying in the milligram class and changing generation.
What actually changed on Fortis
The FX-123 is not a sticker swap. Display, ports, draft shield, and Fortis extras are the differences that show up on a real bench.
Display: FX-123 uses a reverse-backlit LCD with 16 mm characters. FX-120i uses a VFD. If you like the older FX-i glow, that is the 120i. If you want the current Fortis screen, that is the 123.
Ports: FX-123 ships with RS-232C and USB standard. FX-120i is RS-232 standard; Quick USB is an A&D option (FX-i-02), not in the box.
Draft shield: FX-123 includes the Fortis small breeze break as standard on 0.001 g models. A&D lists overall height at 176 mm with that small break installed. The FX-120i includes a 3.4 in factory breeze break (FX-i-10) with a 7.9 in FX-i-11 optional.
Fortis extras: Impact Shock Detection, shock-event logging (up to 50 impacts), and accidental overload protection are part of the current FX-123 story. Do not invent those as FX-i factory talking points.
Generation: FX-123 is Fortis. FX-120i is FX-i. Official Fortis page: A&D Fortis FX/FZ Series. Official FX-i page: A&D FX-120i / FX-i series.
Neither SKU on those two All Scales pages is NTEP. Legal-for-trade Fortis is FX-123N. Legal-for-trade FX-i is FX-120iN. Waterproof is a different SKU (FX-123WP / FX-120iWP).
Leftover FX-120i stock and the no-charge swap
This paragraph is only here because the live FX-120i PDP still says it. We checked that page before publishing. If All Scales later pulls the swap language, treat this as historical.
The FX-120i has been discontinued. Limited stock remains. After you order, All Scales may contact you about a possible change to an FX-200i, FX-300i, or FX-123. An upgrade or change to one of those models is at no extra charge. FX-200i and FX-300i are the same FX-i scale as the 120i, just higher capacity. FX-123 is the successor to the 120i in the same 122 g × 0.001 g class. Every purchase includes a 100 g Texan-tested calibration weight — tested in Texas against our own weights, not a certified mass.
If you specifically want leftover FX-i hardware, start on the A&D FX-120i reloading / lab scale page and be ready for a phone call. If you want the current 122 g Fortis balance with USB in the box and no swap conversation, buy the FX-123.
Which one should you buy
New 122 g milligram bench, reloading or lab: buy the FX-123 at $675.
You already own FX-i accessories, like a 120i draft shield habit or a VFD you prefer, and you accept limited stock plus a possible no-charge change: leftover FX-120i.
You need more than 122 g on the same FX-i generation: that is the FX-200i / FX-300i conversation the live 120i page describes.
You want internal calibration: that is an FZ model, not an FX. FX-123 and FX-120i are both external.
You want a legal-for-trade counter: not these two SKUs.

FAQ
Is the FX-123 a drop-in replacement for an FX-120i?
Same weighing class, same external-cal idea, same milligram job. Not the same display, not the same standard USB story, not the same draft-shield part numbers. If your process only cares about 122 g × 0.001 g, the FX-123 is the current instrument. If your process depends on FX-i ports or a VFD, talk to us before you assume a cable or accessory still fits.
Does leftover FX-120i still include a calibration weight?
Yes, on the live FX-120i page: a 100 g Texan-tested weight is included. The FX-123 package on All Scales USA also includes a 100 g Texan-tested weight. Neither is sold here as a certified calibration mass.
