The A&D SJ-1000HS portable setup is intentionally simple: four D batteries or the optional AC adapter, a large stainless pan, unit selection, zero/tare and a large LCD. Current A&D literature lists approximately 2,000 hours with alkaline D cells, considerably longer than the roughly 800-hour figure still found in some older dealer literature. The scale is non-NTEP and has no standard RS-232C, USB, Bluetooth, counting or percent mode; good setup means using its straightforward weighing functions correctly instead of expecting features from other A&D families.
Four D cells and current battery life
Install four matched D cells in the correct polarity and replace them as a set. Current A&D product information lists about 2,000 hours with alkaline batteries. Actual runtime varies with battery brand, temperature and use. Remove batteries for long-term storage and check the compartment for leakage/corrosion. If the low-battery symbol appears or behavior becomes erratic, replace power before treating the symptom as a calibration problem.
Why older listings may say about 800 hours
MNM’s older SJ-1000HS specification page reflects legacy documentation that cited roughly 800 hours. A&D’s current manufacturer page lists approximately 2,000 hours. Product documentation evolves as battery tests/specifications or hardware revisions change. For current purchasing, use the current manufacturer figure while recognizing that real-world runtime is never guaranteed to equal a laboratory/catalog maximum.
Portable relocation checklist
Use the side handles, place the scale on a stable surface at the new location, confirm the pan is seated and let the scale acclimate if temperature changed. Check zero and apply a known weight before critical work. A portable scale is more likely than a fixed balance to encounter flexible tables, carts, airflow and uneven surfaces, so relocation verification should be part of normal use rather than only something done after a failure.
Units: g, oz, lb and lb-oz
Current SJ-HS supports grams, ounces, pounds and pound-ounce display. Select the correct unit before recording a result and keep the unit with written data. Because this scale has no built-in data interface, transcription is manual; a value such as 1.250 without the unit can be misread later. Standardize the unit in each SOP or recipe to reduce operator mistakes.
Tare and gross capacity
Place the empty bowl/tray on the pan, wait for stability and tare it. The display returns to zero, but the physical container still consumes capacity. Container plus product must remain under 1000 g. Use lightweight standardized containers when possible and choose a higher-capacity scale if a typical bowl leaves too little usable range.
Cleaning the stainless pan
Remove loose food and wipe/clean the SUS304 pan with methods appropriate to the food process. SJ-1000HS is not an SJ-WP washdown model, so do not hose or immerse the scale body. Keep liquid out of the display, battery compartment and electronics. Clean the pan/support area without allowing residue to bind the weighing mechanism, then dry and verify zero before use.
Optional AC adapter
For a fixed station, use the manufacturer-specified AC adapter. Route the cord so it cannot pull on the scale or create a trip hazard. If a weighing problem appears only on AC power, verify the correct adapter and connection before recalibrating. If the station must be used around frequent water spray, select a washdown-rated family rather than relying on the ordinary SJ-HS enclosure.
What the scale does not include
There is no standard RS-232C/USB/Bluetooth interface, no ACAI counting, no percent weighing and no tricolor comparator. This is important when purchasing: choose SJ-1000HS because you want simple portable weighing, not because you expect to add advanced connectivity later. If those functions are required, choose EK-i, FX-i, FC-i, SJ-WP or another family designed for them.
