The A&D SJ-1000HS food-prep and portable portion scale fits simple workflows that need a roomy stainless pan, 1000 g capacity and 0.5 g readability without networking, advanced counting or washdown complexity. It is useful for bakery ingredients, kitchen portions, coffee, packaging checks, classroom work and mobile inspection. The series is NSF compliant in A&D’s current product information, but SJ-1000HS is not an NTEP legal-for-trade model, so it should be used for internal recipes and process checks rather than customer sale-by-weight transactions.

Food prep and kitchen portions

For ingredients and portions up to 1000 g, the half-gram display is much finer than a 1 g kitchen scale without requiring the care of a 0.01 g laboratory balance. Tare a bowl or dish, add product and wait for the roughly one-second stable result. Remember that tare changes the displayed net value but not physical capacity: container plus food must remain under 1000 g.

Baking and pastry work

SJ-1000HS is well suited to flour, sugar, yeast, salt and other ingredients when 0.5 g resolution is sufficient. For micro-ingredients specified in 0.1 g or 0.01 g increments, use a more sensitive balance rather than estimating between display digits. The 230 × 190 mm pan fits many prep bowls better than small round-pan precision balances, making the scale convenient for everyday bakery workflow.

Coffee and beverage prep

A 0.5 g display can support many batch-brew, coffee-bean and ingredient-prep tasks, although specialty espresso dosing often benefits from 0.1 g or finer. The SJ-1000HS is not a timer-equipped espresso scale; its advantages are large pan area, simplicity and long battery life. Use it where a robust bench-style scale matters more than brew-specific software features.

Packaging and fulfillment checks

Small packages and assembled kits can be screened for missing components by expected total weight. Because the scale has no comparator lights or automatic data interface, the operator reads the display directly against a written range. If every result must be logged or automatically accepted/rejected, choose a model with RS-232C/USB/comparator functionality rather than forcing SJ-1000HS into an automation role it was not designed for.

Portable inspection and classroom use

Four D-cell battery operation and side handles make the SJ-HS easy to move to classrooms, workbenches or temporary inspection stations. Current A&D literature lists about 2,000 hours with alkaline batteries, a major advantage when the scale is used away from an outlet. After relocation, place it on a stable surface, confirm zero and verify with a known mass before critical measurements.

NSF versus NTEP

NSF compliance supports food-equipment design/cleanability. NTEP addresses legal metrology for commercial sale by weight. SJ-1000HS is food-oriented but non-NTEP. That makes it appropriate behind the scenes for recipes, portions and QA, but not the scale that establishes a customer’s price in a regulated sale-by-weight transaction. Select a certified food scale such as the appropriate SJ-WP/SK-WP model when both sanitation and trade approval are required.

Simple functions are a feature, not a defect

The model has basic unit selection, zero/tare, auto power-off and battery status. It does not have standard RS-232C, USB, Bluetooth, ACAI counting, percent weighing or tricolor comparator LEDs. For operations that do not need those features, the simpler interface means less setup and training. For operations that do, another A&D series is a better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is SJ-1000HS good for food prep and baking? Yes when 1000 g capacity and 0.5 g readability fit the recipe. Is it NSF compliant? A&D marks the SJ-HS family NSF compliant. Is it NTEP? No. How long do current alkaline batteries last? About 2,000 hours under A&D’s stated conditions. Does it have counting or percent mode? No. Does it have RS-232C? No standard data interface. Is 0.5 g fine enough for espresso dosing? It can work for some coffee tasks, but 0.1 g is preferable for finer dosing. Does tare increase capacity? No.
