How to Calibrate & Verify the A&D SJ-1000HS

A&D SJ-1000HS calibration is an external-weight procedure for a simple 1000 g × 0.5 g portable scale. MNM lists 1000 g as the default calibration mass and older technical data gives approximately 1 g repeatability and 1 g linearity. Good verification begins with a stable surface, clean pan, fresh power and a known reference weight. Because the model is non-NTEP, calibration is an internal process-quality issue rather than a legal-for-trade sealing procedure.

Set up on a stable surface

Place SJ-1000HS on a rigid, level counter. Make sure the 230 × 190 mm pan is seated correctly and that bowls/trays cannot touch a backsplash, cable or surrounding object. Avoid strong airflow, vibration and rapid temperature changes. A portable scale often moves between rooms or carts, so give it time to acclimate and always recheck zero after relocation.

External calibration with 1000 g

Use an appropriate known 1000 g calibration mass and follow the SJ-HS calibration procedure. Start with the pan empty and stable, enter calibration, place the reference in the center without sliding it, wait for stability and complete the sequence. Do not use an unverified household object as a calibration standard. If the scale is used in a documented quality system, select a reference whose accuracy/uncertainty is appropriate to the process tolerance.

Verify after calibration

After calibration, remove the mass and confirm zero, then apply an independent known weight—ideally one representing the typical operating range. Repeat a key load several times to see whether the result is consistent. Calibration adjusts the span; verification checks whether the complete scale/setup is suitable for the task. Keep pre-adjustment data when troubleshooting so a drift trend is not erased by unnecessary recalibration.

Repeatability and practical tolerance

Legacy MNM technical data lists approximately 1 g repeatability and 1 g linearity for SJ-1000HS. A 0.5 g display division therefore should not be confused with a guarantee that every real measurement is accurate within ±0.5 g. Establish the acceptance tolerance from the process and verify it with known weights. If the application truly needs ±0.1–0.2 g performance, move to a precision balance rather than tightening SJ-1000HS beyond its design purpose.

Zero drift and pan contact

If zero will not return, remove all load and check for food/labels/debris beneath the pan, a container touching the counter, a rocking base or temperature transition. Press ZERO only when the pan is truly unloaded and stable. Persistent offsets after mechanical causes are removed justify verification and possibly calibration/service; repeated zeroing should not hide physical interference.

Battery condition can mimic a scale problem

The scale uses four D cells, and current A&D information lists approximately 2,000 hours with alkaline batteries. If response becomes erratic or the low-battery indicator appears, replace all cells as a set before concluding calibration has changed. If a problem occurs only on the optional AC adapter, check the correct adapter/connection separately from weighing performance.

Calibration does not change NTEP status

SJ-1000HS is not an NTEP legal-for-trade model. Careful external calibration improves internal process performance but does not create commercial certification. If weight determines customer price, choose an appropriate certified scale such as an applicable SJ-WP/SK-WP configuration and follow legal placement-in-service requirements.
