LP7515 / OP-902 Calibration Guide: Custom Capacity, Zero, Span & Error Codes

LP7515 calibration and Optima OP-902 calibration follow a specific capacity-and-span workflow—not a generic “press calibrate” routine. The indicator must know the weighing unit, full-scale capacity, decimal point, display division and the exact reference load before it can establish no-load zero and loaded span. This guide explains that sequence and the checks that make the result useful for livestock platforms, spring testers, bench-force fixtures and custom floor scales.

Before Entering Calibration Mode

Calibration cannot correct a binding platform, side-loaded S-type cell, loose mounting foot, damaged cable or unstable junction-box connection. Inspect the structure first. Remove debris and mechanical contact points, confirm that every load cell is installed in its intended direction, tighten mounting hardware consistently, and let the powered indicator stabilize for several minutes. On a four-cell platform, complete the corner-balance or junction-box trim work before final span calibration; otherwise the center may read correctly while individual corners remain wrong.

Use a known reference load that is appropriate for the system. The OP-902 manual requires at least 10% of configured capacity and recommends a substantially larger load when practical; a load in the 60–80% region usually gives a stronger span reference than a very small test weight. Never exceed the safe capacity of the load cells, platform, fixtures, shackles or press used to apply the load.

With the indicator off, hold HOLD and UNIT while powering on to enter the calibration menu. Select the calibration unit, then choose the custom-capacity option when the required capacity is not one of the fixed presets. Set the decimal-point position, select the display division, enter the full-scale capacity and enter the exact calibration load that will be applied. The displayed division is the smallest step shown by the indicator; it should match the intended capacity, load-cell signal and realistic system performance rather than an artificially fine number.

Continue to CALon. When noLoAd appears, make sure the platform or fixture is completely unloaded and stable, then capture zero. When AdLoAd appears, apply the exact reference load entered earlier, allow motion to settle and capture span. CALEnd indicates that the sequence has completed. Remove the load and confirm that the display returns to zero before beginning verification.

How to Verify the Calibration

Do not stop after one span point. Check zero, apply the reference load at least three times, and record repeatability. When possible, test additional points such as roughly 20%, 50% and 80% of working capacity on both increasing and decreasing load. For floor and livestock platforms, place a suitable test load near each supported corner and compare the readings. Large corner differences point to mechanical loading or junction-box trim—not a problem that should be hidden by repeating the center-span calibration.

Calibration Error Codes and What They Mean

ERR1 generally indicates an incorrect or over-capacity calibration load. ERR2 indicates that the applied reference is below the minimum needed for calibration. ERR3 points to a negative load-cell signal, commonly caused by reversed signal wiring or loading in the opposite direction. ERR4 means the signal is not stable enough to capture. ERR5 indicates an EEPROM or stored-data fault. A display filled with upper or lower limit characters can also indicate overload, wiring trouble or a damaged load cell. Correct the cause instead of repeatedly forcing the calibration menu.
