LP7515 Animal Weighing & Peak Hold Guide: Stable Livestock and Force Readings

LP7515 animal weighing depends on selecting the right hold mode. A moving cow, hog or dog creates a changing signal that should be averaged; a compressed spring or pulling fixture may need the highest force captured; a stable pallet may need no hold at all. The LP7515/OP-902 family provides peak, manual, automatic, average-animal and auto-average-animal modes, and each solves a different measurement problem.

Choose the Correct Hold Mode

Peak hold captures the highest measured value and is useful for spring compression, actuator thrust, pull-force tests and other controlled force applications. It is usually the wrong choice for live animals because one hoof impact or gate contact can create a brief high reading that does not represent body weight. Manual hold freezes a reading when the operator presses the control. Automatic hold waits for a sufficiently stable value and captures it without a separate button press.

Average hold and auto-average hold are designed for motion. The indicator samples changing weight over a selected averaging period and displays a representative result. Longer averaging can calm a restless-animal signal but also slows the workflow; shorter averaging is faster but may be less repeatable. The OP-902 procedure allows an averaging time from one to nine seconds. Auto-average begins after the load rises above its activation threshold, making it useful when animals enter and leave a platform repeatedly.

Livestock Weighing Workflow

Start with an empty, clean platform and verify zero. Keep gates, rails, chute panels, manure buildup and surrounding concrete from touching the live weighing deck. Lead the animal fully onto the platform, close the gate without letting it bear on the deck, and wait through the complete averaging interval. Record the held value, release the hold as required, remove the animal and confirm that the platform returns to zero before the next weighing.

For herd-management consistency, use the same platform, gate position, averaging time and weighing routine each session. Animal weight can vary with feed, water and timing, so process consistency matters alongside scale accuracy. The LP7515 is suited to non-NTEP livestock and process applications; legal-for-trade transactions require a complete approved system and local compliance, not merely an indicator with fine displayed resolution.

Using Peak Hold for Springs and Force Testing

For a spring tester, align the force through the load cell’s intended axis and use a fixture that cannot eject the spring. Zero the unloaded fixture, reset peak hold, apply force smoothly and stop before any system component reaches its rated limit. Peak hold records the maximum encountered value; it does not prove that the force was applied at the correct displacement. Spring-rate testing therefore needs a separate, repeatable displacement measurement and several force-versus-travel points rather than one peak number.

Why Animal Readings Stay Unstable

Persistent motion after averaging often comes from more than the animal. Check for a rocking platform, an uneven foot, a chute panel touching the deck, a cable being pulled, moisture in the junction box, one load cell carrying little weight, or a damaged connector. Compare readings at all corners with a known load. If one location differs, correct the mounting and trim balance before changing indicator filters. If the display moves negative under load or jumps when a cable is flexed, inspect wiring before recalibrating.
