The MNM Scales 1,000 lb x 0.2 lb coil spring compression scale is a calibrated S-type load-cell package for race-car suspension springs, component springs and controlled bench-force measurements. Its 1,000 lb capacity covers many shop and motorsports spring tests, while 0.2 lb displayed increments help users compare force at repeatable spring heights instead of relying only on a nominal rate printed on the spring.

What the System Measures

The S-type load cell measures axial compression force. It does not measure spring travel, installed height or deflection by itself. To calculate an average spring rate, record force at two known heights and divide the change in force by the change in deflection. Multiple points are better than one calculation because progressive springs, friction and spring seating can make the force-versus-travel curve change through the stroke.

LP7515 / OP-902 Indicator Functions

The supplied LP7515/OP-902-style indicator provides lb, oz and kg units, zero and tare, several hold modes, battery or AC operation and RS-232 output. Peak Hold is useful when the goal is to capture the maximum force reached during a controlled stroke. For spring-rate work, however, stable readings at fixed heights usually provide more useful data than one peak value.

Build a Safe, Repeatable Compression Fixture

Center the spring between stiff, parallel plates that retain it throughout the stroke. Align the applied force through the load cell’s intended axis and prevent side load, bending and twisting. The press, screw mechanism, plates, adapters and guarding must all be rated for the planned force. Compressed springs store substantial energy, so keep hands and body parts out of the release path and use restraints that remain effective if the spring shifts.

Useful Motorsports and Industrial Tests

Motorsports users can compare left/right spring pairs, check force at installed height, document new-versus-used springs and build a force table across several heights. Industrial users can test actuator thrust, valve and component springs, clamp force, elastomer compression and other controlled loads within the 1,000 lb system rating. Test geometry and loading speed should remain consistent whenever results will be compared.

Calibration and Verification

MNM supplies the package calibrated, but users should still verify unloaded zero, repeatability and one or more known force points on a schedule appropriate to the work. Recalibrate after replacing the indicator or load cell, changing wiring, or making a mechanical change that affects how the force reaches the sensor. Verify the result at several points rather than assuming that one correct span value proves the complete working range.
