The MNM 1,000 lb coil spring tester helps racers and chassis tuners measure spring force at controlled heights, compare springs marked with the same nominal rate and document how a spring behaves through its working travel. The scale measures force; pairing those readings with accurate height or deflection measurements turns it into a practical spring-rate and spring-matching tool.

Measure Force at Installed Height
Compress each spring to the same target height and record the stable force. This can reveal differences between springs carrying the same label, help match a left/right pair and show whether an older spring has relaxed. Use the same plates, orientation, temperature and approach direction for every test so fixture effects do not look like spring differences.
Calculate an Average Rate Over a Travel Interval
Record force at two or more known heights. Subtract the lower force from the higher force, then divide by the corresponding change in deflection. For example, a 200 lb force increase over 2 inches represents an average 100 lb/in rate across that interval. Test several points because progressive springs and some racing designs do not follow one constant rate through their entire stroke.
Understand Hysteresis and Fixture Friction
A reading taken while compressing may differ from a reading taken while releasing because of spring hysteresis, seating changes or fixture friction. Always approach comparison points in the same direction. If the difference is unusually large, inspect the plates, guides and load path for binding or side load before blaming the spring.
When to Use Peak Hold
Peak Hold captures the highest force encountered during a stroke and can be useful for a controlled maximum-force check. It is not a substitute for recording stable force at defined heights when calculating spring rate. Reset Peak Hold before each run and make sure a brief impact, plate contact or mechanical stop is not being recorded as the spring’s true force.
Safety for High-Energy Springs
Use a rigid, guarded fixture with plates that retain the spring throughout the planned travel. Verify that the press or screw mechanism, frame, fasteners and adapters are rated above the working force. Keep people outside the potential release path. The load cell reports force; it does not restrain the spring or make an unsafe fixture safe.
